Today is Earth Day! Celebrate it! The Koumbit Collective currently has lovely seed mixes that we put together using 54 different species of flowering native plants.  We will be spreading the love around ourselves and have packets of these for you to follow suit! Contact us to get your hands on some. Also plant some trees! We have tons of Kentucky Coffee Tree seeds that are just itching to get planted in the ground! Be well!

Also, thanks to all those that were able to make it out to our Earth Day/House warming party this past weekend! It was lovely to see your faces and share good times, kombucha and music with you! Many more get-togethers to come!

Baby Cheekens

We had to share a picture of our baby chickens with you! We are currently fostering five laying hens, which will go on to be the happy (and uneaten) pets of a local landscaping crew. Our flock is comprised of two silver lacey Wyandottes, a golden Wyandotte, one Auracana, and one Barred Rock. Stay tuned to our tumblr for more pictures!

Coming soon...

We are currently sprouting the following cool weather plants:

 - Radishes ('French Breakfast,' they mature quickly... you'll be eating radishes in no time)
 - Pansies (assorted colors)
 - Zone 5 perennial wildflower mixes

And the following indoor tropicals/houseplants/windowsill plants:

 - Sweet Basil (can be planted outside when warmer weather arrives)
 - Jade plant (Crassula ovata species)
 - Pincushion cactus (Mammillaria, species unknown, probably zeilmanniana... super cute!)

These happy plants and many more will be available at the Glenwood Sunday Market starting in June... but they'll be ready to go home with you in early April! Please email us to pick up plants on-site.

Welcome to the Koumbit Blog

Hello!

Thanks for visiting our blog. The Koumbit Collective is a group of Chicago-based individuals who work together to produce wonderful agricultural products for our city, while creating funds and interest for charitable works both local and worldwide. We empower the urban gardener with our organic starter plants, and also produce fruits, vegetables, herbs, teas, and several other cottage industry products through our low-impact sustainable urban farm. Our goal is to do what we love while also contributing to the Chicago community and the global community.

Chicago is a principal frontier of the urban farming movement. To learn more, see our list of related links, and check our blog for updates on this topic and all our current projects. We can't wait to show you what we're growing!
